Where Qatar’s desert drives straight into the sea.
Khor Al Adaid is a tidal inlet the Gulf pushes inland until it is surrounded by dunes, an hour and a half south of Doha and hard against the Saudi border. You come over the last ridge and there is water where there should be sand. Nothing else in the country looks like it.

North of Doha the coast keeps its ruins.
An hour up the coast road: a fort at Al Zubarah with a pearling town buried behind it, the abandoned village at Al Jumail with the roofs gone and the mosque still standing, and the mangroves at Al Thakira, which you paddle rather than drive.
Eight hours at Hamad is enough to see Doha.
The airport is twenty minutes from the Corniche and the transit desk is used to it. What decides whether a layover works is the length of the gap, not the city: below six hours the desert is out and the city is tight, and everything depends on how fast you clear immigration.

Drive west from Doha until the desert turns into sculpture.
The Zekreet peninsula is an hour and a half of nothing, then limestone stacks the wind has undercut into mushrooms, and then four rusting steel plates a kilometre apart in the Brouq reserve. Richard Serra put them there in 2014 and the walk between them is the point.

Doha is a city you see in the last two hours of the day.
Nothing outdoors here works at two in the afternoon. The souq, the waterfront and the cultural village all come alive once the sun is off them, and the museums are where the middle of the day goes.
Souq Waqif
The market was knocked about and rebuilt in the 2000s using the old mud-render and timber, which purists grumble about and nobody else notices. Go after the call to evening prayer: the spice alleys fill, the shisha courtyards fill, and the falcon souq across the road is still trading birds at eleven at night.

Katara
A cultural quarter dropped whole onto the coast between West Bay and The Pearl — amphitheatre, two mosques, galleries, a public beach. It looks like a film set because it effectively is one, and it is the easiest place in Doha to walk for an hour without a car anywhere near you.

The Museums
I. M. Pei came out of retirement for the Museum of Islamic Art and put it on its own island so nothing could ever be built in front of it. The National Museum, Jean Nouvel’s interlocking discs, is a desert rose the size of a city block. Both are air-conditioned, which in June is the whole argument.

Qatar has two seasons, and one of them is unusable outdoors.
From May to September the afternoons run past 40°C with the humidity of a coast, and the desert is worse. November to March is the season everything is built around: dune camps open, the camel racing runs at Al Shahaniya, and a midday walk through the souq is pleasant rather than a bad idea. Ramadan shifts opening hours across the board — check before you book.
